In a recent tweet, DUP MP Sammy Wilson made an inaccurate claim regarding the use of coal-fired generators in the UK during a heatwave. While it is true that solar panels are slightly less efficient in hot temperatures, this was not the primary reason for resorting to coal power stations. Upon speaking with Mr. Wilson, he confirmed that he had misinterpreted an article, which mentioned a “severe” decrease in output rather than the panels being taken offline.
Solar Energy UK clarifies that solar panel performance decreases by 0.34 percentage points for every degree above 25°C. However, it is important to note that solar power still generates a significant amount of electricity during the summer due to longer days and clearer skies, despite the reduced efficiency.
On June 12, coal power was utilised for the first time in 46 days. Nonetheless, solar power contributed approximately one-fifth of the UK’s electricity during the midday period. While solar output was down by nearly a quarter compared to the previous weekend, it still played a substantial role in electricity generation.
Over the past seven days, solar power accounted for 9.2% of the UK’s electricity, surpassing the 4.3% contribution observed throughout 2022. This increase is expected during the summer season when solar power generation tends to be higher than average.
Various factors can explain the temporary reactivation of coal power stations:
- The increased demand for electricity from air conditioning due to hot temperatures.
- Less electricity generation from wind farms due to lower wind speeds.
- Maintenance activities on gas power stations resulting in reduced natural gas usage.
- A technical fault affecting the electricity interconnectors between the UK and Norway, leading to lower import capacity.
The Climate Change Committee, an independent advisory body to the UK government, stated in March that further measures need to be taken to prepare for periods with limited wind and solar energy production. The committee suggested low-carbon alternatives such as hydrogen investment and the continued use of natural gas with carbon capture technology to ensure reliable power supply without contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.
The UK government has set a goal to generate all electricity from clean sources by 2035 as a crucial step towards achieving its net-zero emissions target by 2050.
