Take Small Steps to Build a Brighter Future

Tree growing with hand, eco earth day, save world, save earth, go green

We all want to live in a cleaner, healthier world but taking your first steps can be overwhelming if you’re not sure where to start. Many people assume living sustainably requires major inconvenient lifestyle changes but the truth is anything you do (big or small) can have an impact.

We’re going to explore some of the simplest ways to live more sustainably, reduce waste and conserve resources. By taking these small steps, you won’t only be doing your part for the environment but also saving yourself money in the long run.

Today we’re offering just a handful of simple solutions to get you started on your green journey. Let’s get started!

1. Embrace the 3 R’s

You’ve heard the phrase before: “reduce, reuse, recycle”. By reducing waste, reusing items and recycling materials where possible you can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. There are many ways you can embrace these practices but let’s settle on just a few.

Plastics are a huge issue for the environment that causes issues within local ecosystems, wildlife, plant life and sea life. Start by avoiding single-use plastics and opting for reusable bags, water bottles and containers instead. You don’t need to do this overnight but instead, you could make a conscious effort over time to carry a reusable water bottle, make your lunches instead of buying them or buy alternatives to your favourite products that aren’t packaged in plastic.

Repurposing items like jars and containers to store food instead of buying new ones is also good. You can choose to upcycle items yourself or find a local business that can do it for you – there are many out there! If you insist on getting rid of things, be aware that many products you might think go in regular recycling in fact can’t. Things like batteries and crisp packets should ideally be taken to a specialist recycling point directly.

2. Conserve Energy at Home

Another simple way to live more sustainably is to conserve energy at home and there are many small steps you can take to save energy and reduce your carbon footprint.

Start by turning off lights and unplugging electronics when you’re not using them. You’d be surprised but many appliances (especially games consoles) consume energy even on standby. Over a year or two, this can lead to £100s in unnecessary energy.

Install LED bulbs in your home as they use less energy and last longer. Nowadays, they’re a much more efficient and sustainable option than anything else on the market with less maintenance and carbon output involved too. Whether you run a business or you’re looking for an at-home solution, LEDs are a great way to save money and conserve energy.

You can also replace your old appliances with energy-saving alternatives, such as a refrigerator, dishwasher, or washing machine. Modern technology has made modern appliances much more energy-efficient than alternatives from maybe just a few years ago. If you’re in the market for new appliances, consider choosing newer models that can use energy more effectively.

There are also government schemes to help you replace boilers, insulation and windows at a discounted or fully-funded rate. It’s worth asking your local authorities what support is available in your area.

For even greater energy savings, consider installing solar panels or a battery unit. Not only will you be reducing your carbon footprint, but you’ll also be saving money on your energy bills in the long run.

3. Choose Eco-Friendly Products

It’s 2023 and that means for every business or product you can imagine, there is probably an eco-friendly alternative. From face wipes that are biodegradable to supermarkets that do not sell fresh produce in plastic and restaurants that use organic, sustainably-sourced ingredients. You can find it. It’s one of the easiest waste-reducing ways to live more sustainably as you can gradually search for and replace your old buying habits with eco-friendly versions at no personal detriment.

Start by becoming more conscious of what your products are contained in and search for sustainable alternatives that use bamboo, recycled plastic or organic cotton instead. When you go shopping, look for symbols on the package that tell you if the product is recyclable or biodegradable. You should be able to find eco-friendly cleaning products that are chemical-free very easily online or in shops. If you’re looking for a new car, consider an electric vehicle with zero emissions, a hybrid or another low-emission vehicle.

Make your transition to EV ownership even easier with an at-home charging station from Bright Spark.

4. Grow Your Own Food

Growing your own food isn’t just sustainable, it can also be a fun and rewarding experience. By growing your own fruit, vegetables and herbs you can reduce your carbon footprint and save money on food shops. You don’t need a large garden to start growing your own food, you can start with small potted plants on your windowsill. If you’re feeling adventurous you can even start composting to create nutrient-rich soil for your plants made from your food waste.

Alternatively, you can look around on social media (particularly Facebook) to find local groups where people sell or give away their own homegrown produce.

5. Support Sustainable Businesses

Finally, an important part of sustainable living is to support sustainable businesses. Your purchasing power means a lot in today’s society so choosing not to buy from businesses that are unsustainable sends an important message to them. In theory, as more people start to choose sustainable businesses, it will become more apparent that those that don’t will need to change their practices.

Spending money with local or sustainable businesses instead of big companies is a great way to support your local community and promote growth in your area’s economy. You can also rest in the knowledge that your money is being used to directly support the livelihoods and families of real people around you. And that’s a pretty cool thought!

Summary

There are various ways to live sustainably and it can be achieved by taking small steps and making conscious decisions in daily life. Living sustainably can start with the philosophy of reducing, reusing, and recycling. It might not be straightforward and easy at times but it can certainly be fun and rewarding to discover new ways to shop, knowing you’re contributing to a brighter future for society.
