A Large LED Lighting Upgrade to Reduce Energy Costs
The team at Bright Spark Energy have recently completed the installation of a LED Lighting upgrade at UTC Plymouth in Devonport, Plymouth. UTC is a specialist 14-19 University Technical College.
The Lighting upgrade was designed to maximise savings on energy costs, reduce the colleges impact on the environment as well as improving teaching and learning environments. Studies have shown that an increase in lighting quality improves students and staff concentration leading to better results.

The UTC project was an interesting challenge due to the wide range of different learning environments within the building. These ranged from traditional classrooms to large machinery and mechanical workshops.
We, in partnership with Ansell Lighting, completed a detailed lighting design work for these specialist areas to ensure that our installation met CIBSE05 and CIBSE07 design criteria as well as delivering stringent energy saving criteria.
Project specifics included:
· 958 LED Luminaires (including 112 over 4 metres)
· Emergency Lighting Upgrade
· Controls and Lighting Management
· All spaces meeting CIBSE05 and CIBSE07 Requirements
· Energy Savings of 84,968kWhs per annum (43% building saving)
· Energy Savings of £ 12,783.79 in Year 1
· Maintenance Savings of £ 1,537 per annum
· Mix of Highbays, Lowbays, 600 Panels, Battens, 230 Circ Panels, Emergency fittings
· 13Yr Ansell Product Warranty and 3Yr Installation Warranty


Installation
Our installation team had to work around timetabling, other contractors and the weather at this time of the year. We installed in the evenings to minimise the impact to teaching and learning.
Many of the Emergency Lighting battery packs had failed and some of the emergency feeds were never installed properly – Bright Spark rectified free of charge .
